Digital Engineering addresses the ideal interaction of methods (systematic approach), tools (functional IT processes), models (suitable representations) and processes (coordinated steps) in the development, production and operation of technical systems. In research, we are concerned with the design of this interaction, in particular using technological drivers such as IoT, advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud services/platforms.
Our research focuses on the topic clusters listed below with an application focus on Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) and Product Service Systems (PSS):
Product Lifecycle Information Management & Digital Twin Concepts.
- Digital Twin Model Representation
- Feed Forward/Backward Information Flows
Systems Engineering Tools & Assistant Systems
- Model Integration of Structure, Function, Logic, Behavior, Technology
- Design Automation/Generative Design
- Engineering-Manufacturing Integration
VR/AR & Advanced Human Machine Interfaces (HMI)
- Individualized and Context Aware Information Provision
- VR/AR for Engineering, Training, and Education
The main goals of our research activities are, on the one hand, the most complete possible model representation and description of complex technical systems with their properties and behavior in the computer and, on the other hand, the integration and optimization of IT procedures for domain-spanning and multidisciplinary product information management. Aspects of system modeling and information technology integration of product development, production system development and production are holistically considered in research projects with industrial partners with methods for the operational introduction of IT systems (PLM, ERP, MES) as well as with the reorganization of engineering processes in industry.
For the execution of our projects and the student work the chair has an extensive hardware and software equipment. This consists of the market-leading software systems in the fields of CAD, simulation, product lifecycle management (PLM), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
